Richard Gibson as Herr Flick & Kim Hartman as Helga
I met Kim Hartman at the Birmingham NEC in August 2006. She was very friendly, and added her signature to the autograph page of my first edition of The War Diaries of Rene Artois.
She trained at the Webber Douglas Academy in London, and was also assistant stage manager at Coventry's Belgrade Theatre, where she met David Croft, co-writer and director of 'Allo! 'Allo!
Kim was one of a number of 'Allo! 'Allo! stars at Memorabilia that day - and I have done a page on my website for each of them.
Kim's early acting career was in theatres like the Bristol Old Vic and the Redgrave Theatre in Farnham. She appeared in many different plays ranging from Billy Liar (Rita), Much Ado About Nothing (Margaret), The Cherry Orchard (Doonyasha) and Hobson's Choice (Alice) to George Bernard Shaw's St Joan.
Kim Hartman was born in London in 1955, but grew up in Stratford-Upon-Avon. With all its Shakespearian associations, it's not surprising that Kim became hooked on the theatre.
Her later theatrical work has taken her to many parts of the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Dubai, as well as Europe and the USA.
A whole decade of Kim Hartman's life was devoted to the long-running TV comedy series 'Allo! 'Allo! in which she appeared in all 96 episodes between 1982 and 1992. She also toured with the stage version of the show in 1996, which included a five-week run in London's West End.
Kim Hartman's character in 'Allo! 'Allo! is that of Helga Geerhart, the Commandant's loud-voiced assistant who is a typical blond-haired, blue-eyed German frau. She is Herr Flick's lover, and is very often seen stripping off her clothes, usually to reveal very colourful and provocative undergarments!
Kim is a co-founder of the production company Quinton Arts which she formed, and runs, with her husband John Nolan. She has directed several plays including Shakespeare's Comedy Of Errors and Henry V as well as Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard.
With so much live theatre work, Kim Hartman has done relatively little on TV, but she has appeared in include The Kelly Monteith Show, Comedy Playhouse The Brittas Empire, Casualty, and most recently as Mrs Rawlinson, a teacher in Grange Hill. She has also appeared on numerous talk and quiz shows, in radio dramas, and in pantomime!
