Tony Todd
I first met Tony Todd at Memorabilia held at the NEC in Birmingham in March 2007, when he signed a photo of him as Ben in Night of the Living Dead. I met him there again in November 2009, and this time he signed my photo of him as Captain Darrow in The Rock.
I gave him a printed copy of his page from my website, which he said he would frame when he got home!
Tony Todd was born Timothy Henry Todd in Washington DC in 1954. He was an only child, and his early years were spent in Hartford, Connecticut, where he attended local schools before moving to the University of Connecticut. From there, he gained a scholarship from the renowned Eugene O'Neill National Theatre Institute.
Whilst in his 20s he threw himself into acting in a big way, appearing in many classical plays and experimental drama with both the Hartman Conservatory in Stamford, and the Trinity Square Repertory Theatre Conservatory in Providence, Rhode Island. He also taught playwriting to high school students in Hartford.
As a stage actor, Tony has excelled in plays like The Captain's Tiger (receiving a Helen Hayes nomination) and two plays by August Wilson - King Hedley II, in which Todd played the title role in Pittsburgh, Seattle and Boston, and Fences, a superb play about baseball legend Troy Maxson. Other theatre credits include Matura's Playboy of the West Indies, Shakespeare's Othello, and more recently, Shephard-Massat's Levee James.
It is for his film and TV roles that Tony Todd is best known. Since his first films Sleepwalk (1986) and the Academy Award-winning Platoon (1986) his credits run to almost 150. An early starring role was as Ben in the remake of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1990) which Tom Savini directed. Two years later came Candyman (1992)the film for which Tony is probably best known. In this he plays the title role of the hook-handed killer Daniel Robitaille (aka Candyman). According to legend 'Candyman' was brutally murdered, but can be summoned by looking into a mirror and chanting his name five times. Helen Lyle, a student researching urban legends in Chicago, does just that - with horrifying consequences! Todd is terrifying as Candyman, who murders his victims with his hook. The sequel Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) reveals how Candyman came about, and how he was killed, but this time the gory action takes place in New Orleans. A third film in the series Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) was less successful - even Tony admitting he didn't care for it much!
Tony is 6' 5" tall and with his deep, powerful voice, makes a terrifying villain! He has become something of a 'horror icon', with other notable films in this genre including Enemy Territory (1987); Wishmaster (1997); the trilogy Final Destination (2000-6); Hatchet (2006); Minotaur (2006) and Chicago Massacre: Richard Speck (2007) based on a real life mass-murder from 1966.
Tony Todd is a versatile actor and, away from horror, has had roles in successful films which include Grange in The Crow (1994); Captain Darrow in the Oscar-nominated The Rock (1996) and Bill in Le Secret (2000), which was nominated and screened at the Cannes Film Festival and Dockweiler (2008);
On TV, Tony Todd is well known for his portrayal of Seth in Beastmaster: The Eye of Braxas (1996); for various appearances in Star Trek (1987-95); and for guest appearances in The X Files (1994) and Xena: Warrior Princess (1997). More recently he has appeared in ten episodes of Chuck (2007-8) and five episodes of 24 (2009). Tony Todd's starring roles in TV films include Jomo in Ivory Hunters (1990); Britt Johnson in Black Fox (1995), Ed Tom in True Women (1997) and Reggie in Control Factor (2003).
